Four Common Products You Didn't Know Would Clean Your Carpets

When it comes to cleaning carpets, there are so many different types of cleaners you can choose from. There are even many homemade cleaners you can make using products in your home. Some of these items are common knowledge, such as vinegar, baking soda, and club soda. There are a few other items in your home that you can use to clean up carpet stains and those items just might surprise you.

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream is essentially a foamy soap. It helps to soften the hair follicles for removal. It will also clean up different stains on your carpet. Dollop a good inch thick of shaving cream over the stain on your carpet. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes. Scrub the shaving cream into the carpet using a brush. Start on the edge of the stain and work your way in so you don't accidentally spread the stain. Clean up the shaving cream with a wet lint-free cloth and the stain will go with it.

Shaving cream works great on grease and oil stains.

Meat Tenderizer

When you get an unwanted stain on your carpet, go ahead and tenderize it like a piece of steak. Meat tenderizer works really well on blood stains. Make a paste by mixing meat tenderizer and water. Use equal parts of each for a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain on the carpet. Use at least 1/2-inch thick layer of paste. Let it sit for a half hour so that it will "tenderize" the carpet. Clean up the paste with a wet cloth and the stain will be gone.

Beer

This one might seem strange. Why would you use something that stains carpet to remove carpet stain? You do it because it works on older stains, such as tea or coffee stains that have sat for awhile. Pour some beer onto a lint-free cloth and blot it into the stain. Rinse out the beer using a wet cloth. Repeat the process, alternating between beer and water, until the stain is removed. You'll remove the stain and clean up the beer before it even has a chance to stain the carpet.

Cornstarch

When you cook with cornstarch you are using it to thicken your food. It absorbs the liquid. It will do the same thing with stains. Cornstarch works best on liquid stains of any kind. Sprinkle cornstarch over the wet stain and let it sit. After a little while you'll notice that the cornstarch is now crumbly. That's because it soaked up the liquid. Brush it up and the stain is gone. A mixture of cornstarch and milk is also great to clean up ink spills.
